Great Travel Moment Salvador was Brazil's first capital and the Pelourinho is its historical center. Pelourinho means whipping post in Portuguese and the area was the old slave auction location. It fell in disarray in the centuries after slavery was abolished until it became a bad and dangerous neighborhood. The city invested millions of dollars in a renovation project a few years ago and now a tourist attraction again, Pelourinho is especially alive at night, with many fine shops and restaurants around its beautifully illuminated colonial buildings and churches. |
