Great Travel Moment The Basilica di San Marco blends the architectural and decorative styles of the Eastern and Western worlds, creating one of the most magnificent buildings in Europe. History, for me, was the most interesting thing to discover when traveling throughout Venice, Italy. I was captivated by these buildings, and what they had been before my lifetime. Since 1075, all ships returning from abroad, by law, had to bring back a gift to adorn the Basilica. Outlined against the gray sky, the array of stone figures of the Basilica never looked more beautiful. The sky had been raging during our second day in Venice. Rain had poured from above us, the good news being that we had even the most picturesque parts of the Basilica to ourselves. This figure in particular, charmed me. How long had she been standing there? Did her face belong to another before she was immortalized in stone? |
