Great Travel Moment Cairo Citadel was built by Salah al-Din (Saladin, for short) in the XII century to protect the city of Cairo from the Crusaiders. A huge mosque was a later add-on. The guide told us it was just like the famous Blue Mosque in Istanbul. I have seen the Blue Mosque in Istanbul and let me tell you that this one does not even come close. For starters, it is two minarets short. Still, the Citadel sits on a prime piece of a real estate on the top of the hill overlooking the Egyptian capital and I bet on a clear day (yeah, right!) one can see for miles. Cairo Citadel certainly is impressive: just look at the man in a blue shirt at the bottom of the photo to give you an idea of its size! |
