Great Travel Moment We dismissed the heat as we took off on camels toward the dunes. The ride was made interesting by passing kids, a runaway camel, and a dastardly guttural sound made every few minutes by the camel ahead of me. These interruptions, which convinced me the beast was vomiting, hissing and sneezing all at once, produced a foam amidst what turned out to be a monstrous flopping tongue -mating behavior, as it was explained. When the trees and scrub thinned, the view opened up to a ridge of sand dunes, whose perfection was marred only by the dents of the camel steps that had preceded us. At the top of a mound, a group of riders sat with local boys. One camel lumbered off to the side for an afternoon snack. When we arrived at the top, we sat in peace and became part of the silhouettes. |
