Great Travel Moment Legend tells of a magnificent ancient city that succumbed to the sea, leaving only myths of its rich history and greatness to pass along to future generations. Some fear that modern-day Venice may one day suffer a similar fate. Traveling on business, I decided to take a side-trip to this beating heart of history before it disappears altogether. My last night in Venice, I was fortunate to come across this tranquil scene of a young boy playfully splashing in a flooded St. Mark's Square bathed in moonlight. I had heard stories of the periodic floods and the inevitable fate of the "Sinking City" but couldn't completely comprehend the Italians' lackadaisical attitude towards the rising tide. But seeing this boy enveloped in glistening water, I understood -- how could such worries overshadow such mesmerizing beauty? And so, I believe I have been lucky enough to see both Venice and Atlantis. Truly magical. |
