Great Travel Moment Varanasi is India's holiest Hindu city. We went to Varanasi to celebrate Diwali (The Festival of Lights). The festival celebrates Lord Rama's triumphant return to Ayodbya symbolizing the victory of good over evil. The sixth day is the holiest day of Diwali. We were up at 4 a.m. to be on the Ganges before sunrise. We were rowed in a small boat up the Ganges and back again. As the sun was rising, we watched the morning activities at each Ghats. There was a cremation, laundty washed in the river and laid out to dry on the steps, and people saying their morning prayers. We bought little urns from a souvenir boat, scooped up some water of the Ganges, and sealed the tops. A great time to be in India. |
