Great Travel Moment On August 6, 2008, while in port at Juneau, I took several pictures, on the Whale Quest Excursion off our NCL, Norwegian Sun, Alaskan Cruise. This is my favorite. It was explained to us, by our guide, that this was an extremely rare sight. We watched this phenomenon for 45 minutes! Adult Humpbacks normally travel solo, but for this particular activity, they work in harmony, following the directions of a female. She orders the Pod of six males to dive down, surrounding a school of fish, then circle, and then calls out the order to blow. The bubbles confuse the fish, who are stunned, and when she calls out again, they all surface, consuming as many fish as possible. It was awesome to both hear and see this rare bit of nature in action. I have seen whales before, in my travels, but this was really something unique for me. |
