Great Travel Moment The summer of 2002 my sister and I met up in Europe to travel together. We had general travel plans but had no idea we would end up seeing the Matterhorn. Serendipity lead us to cut our travels in Italy short and take a train up to Switzerland. The temperature dropped as we took a cable car up the mountainous terrain to Zermatt. We stayed at a cozy hostel and met a couple that was traveling around the world. And though I had no plans to do any hiking, I accepted their invitation to leave at 3:30 the next morning to see the sunrise on the Matterhorn. Halfway to the lookout point I wished I had not been traveling in sandals, but by the time we reached the full view of the mountain I had no thoughts, just wonder. I photographed the landscape around me, knowing that the people who had set up this monument of stones felt the same sense of awe. |
