Great Travel Moment I chose 2006 to visit Mongolia because that marked the 8ooth anniversary of Genghis Khan uniting the tribes of this area into the Mongolian nation. I knew there would be special festivities to mark this occasion, but never dreamed I would witness an event as spectacular as The Festival of Eurasia. The re-enactment of Genghis Khan's battles was breathtaking. Hundreds of soldiers, dressed in authentic costumes, raced across a broad field on their sturdy Mongolian horses to do battle with an opposing army. I was in the first row of stands that flanked the field shooting image after image of the amazing scene taking place before me - covered with the dust being kicked up by the galloping hordes just a few feet away - witnessing a piece of history that, up until that moment, had been but a fascinating story in my copy of "Genghis Khan: The Making of the Modern World". |
