Great Travel Moment I went on a special access tour of Stonehenge in January, 2005 with my friend Rebbecca. She had just turned 30 and had never traveled abroad before. We were allowed to wander among the stones for about 30 minutes right at dawn. Normally the stones are closed off and can only be viewed from a distance. It was a very special privilege, and the sun rising over the stones was dramatic. I enjoyed the sensation of experiencing the monument in much the same way that its builders must have thousands of years ago. To experience this with a good friend was even more special. Afterwards, we celebrated with a champagne toast in the van, and then took a tour of Salisbury cathedral. It was well worth getting up at 4:00 in the morning and waiting for our ride in the cold London rain. |
