Great Travel Moment I was lucky enough to be in Barcelona on a gorgeous sunny day during La Merce, a 4-day citywide festival devoted to the city?s patron saint. One of the central events is a competition of Catalunya?s best castellers, people who form human castles. The main competition takes place once a year in La Placa Plaza Jaume. Castellers are successful if they can build a pyramid and have the smallest member of the group climb to the top of the pyramid and wave his or her hand in the air. This group of castellers from Barcelona completed this dangerous task and were greeted by loud applause. Watching the children climb to the top of the heap was awe-inspiring! It was amazing to be in the center of the town plaza cheering and watching this competition with local people from Barcelona celebrating their patron saint and regional pride! |
