Great Travel Moment My husband and I time our annual visit to South Africa to coincide with the Minstrel Parade in Cape Town on January 2nd every year. This festival used to be called the Coon Carnival, and it celebrates the annual slave holiday, where legend says families of children and grown men alike would paint their faces white as they danced through the streets, mocking their bosses. The infectious music, drumming of bare feet and explosion of bright color is a joyous spectacle that wraps itself around the multicolored crowds lining the city, leaving everyone drunk with joy. |
