Great Travel Moment The ancient Greeks believed this spot at Delphi was the center of the world. Way up in these mountains, looking at this spot brought this history alive for me. After climbing approximately 2000 feet up to this spot in an air conditioned bus in the middle of June, I was amazed to think how many ancient Greeks made that climb on foot to ask a question of the Oracle, usually after waiting days to get the opportunity. Reveling in the guide's rendition of how this rock became the center of the world when Zeus released two eagles, enjoying the beauty of these mountains, and the valley below, I began to believe I truly was among the gods. I live among the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia, but this place in Greece remains etched in my memory as my favorite mountain spot in the world. |
