Great Travel Moment

On the narrow road that clings to the coast between Rockport and Fulton, Texas, you come suddenly upon this shrine. There is no sign or monument marker, just a point of land covered in oyster shells where the Madonna and Child offer a silent benediction with their backs to the sea. Winds coming off the Gulf of Mexico send waves crashing on the rocks. Sea spray falls delicate and salty on the offerings at the Virgin's feet. It is a peaceful but haunting place.
