Great Travel Moment

Imagine a piano playing in the distance yet still sounding as if it was coming from right around the corner. Imagine hearing the clatter of pots and pans as dinner is being prepared in the nearby palazzo. In Venice, where no cars muffle the ambient sounds of life, it feels as if you are walking through the living rooms and kitchens of the Venetians. This photograph of someone's vivid red linens hanging out to dry ought to be accompanied by the low mummer of conversation and children playing games in a hidden courtyard. After stumbling onto this scene, my wife and I were so glad that our B&B was away from the tourist centers. Because, away from the bustle of the crowds, the otherworldliness of Venice awakens.
