Great Travel Moment It was my first and only time in Budapest, in the fall of 2004. Walking alone briskly downtown, trying to take in the sights and sounds, I almost passed this woman without noticing her. She was silent and still, unlike many panhandlers I've encountered elsewhere around the world. I spoke no Hungarian and doubt she spoke English, but for some things language is unnecessary. It was only later, during moments of quiet reflection, that a thought came to me: that there but for grace, go I. And the words of Christ from Holy Writ rang in my ears:"Inasmuch as you have done it unto one of these, the least of your brothers/sisters, you have done it unto Me." |
