Great Travel Moment In 1997, 2 buddies and I had been in Utila Honduras for a couple of days. We were snorkeling and just hanging out; but mostly we were itching and scratching thesand fly/no see-um bites. Utila is a big SCUBA diving island. None of us had a SCUBA license, but a stay on the island for a few days was just part of a bigger trip on the mainland. We really liked the laid back (Read: Backpacker) vibe on the island: Long slow breakfasts at the little blue bakery café, bicycle rides to the windy side of the island, dinners at over-the-water-cafes with views to the west towards the mainland, evening thunderstorms and sunsets, and a late night dancehall. But, we were really ready to get away from the flies. We and some other backpackers rented a boat out to Water Caye with the promise from the boat driver that there were NO flies It turned to out to be a great afternoon. This is one of the pictures from that day; it still reminds me of the relief that I felt of not worrying about the flies! |
