Great Travel Moment In 1999 I traveled to Vietnam. North of Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) is the fishing, beach town of Phan Thiet. I found a small beach front bungalow ($5) at a place ran by a Swiss man and his wife. The next morning I awoke before sunrise with the hopes of a memorable sunrise. Plus, the crashing waves woke me up, not that I was complaining! As I had hoped, the sunrise was stunning. I noticed a group of people pulling in huge fishing nets. Perfect, I thoughtPhoto Op! I wandered closer to the group and sat in the sand and took a few pictures; and just enjoyed the sunrise. After a few moments they noticed me. A man walked over, I thought, to ask me to leave; instead he made pulling motions and pointed at me. They wanted my help! I gladly jumped in line and began to pull on the long ropes. After an hour or so the days catch was in, and by that point we were old friends. I was then allowed to take far more intimate photos than I ever expected. This series of photos tell a nice story. |
