Great Travel Moment ?The open air market in Pisac proved the perfect spot to photograph one vendor's colorful and varied examples of the more than 55 varieties of corn currently grown throughout Peru. It proved also the ideal place for our Quechua guide to offer us a lesson in the corn culture of Peru. As we learned, and would later have a chance to experience, Peruvians prepare and consume corn in ways Americans never imagined. One particularly tasty variety of white corn has kernels the size of quarters and is boiled or roasted and eaten as a snack or side dish. Another, dark red variety, is used to make a sweet pudding and refreshing drink. We were even treated to corn ice cream. Who knew corn would offer such eye-opening and tastebud-opening memories? |
