Great Travel Moment The arch is one of the strongest shapes in (arch)itecture both stylistically and structurally. The Romans had it right when they conceived this perfect ratio of form and function. Segovia was but one of many distant outposts established across Europe by the conquering Romans, and luckily they left something substantial enough to remind everyone of their glory days. Segovians are justly proud of this feat of engineering that dominates their old city square. In fact, it is the official symbol of Segovia, and rightly so. My first time witnessing this wonder left me speechless, and pardon the pun, eternally grateful. This majestic monument with its elegant double row of arches is remarkably intact, and surprisingly solid. One of the finest surviving examples to be found anywhere on European soil. A true testament to the skill and success of human endeavor. |
