Great Travel Moment Pompeii the glories of a Roman city lost for over a thousand years and brought back to life. These stones, great blocks of basalt from the flanks of Vesuvius form a roadway polished by thousands of footsteps. The people who walked this street have been lost to history, but some were trapped by the ash forever. This trip took my wife and I back in time. At the base of the silent giant which destroyed the city ages ago, we were not lulled by that quiet like the ancient people of Pompeii. We knew there is a power that lurks just below the gently sloping slides of the mountain. We quietly strolled their streets, walked into their homes, admired their tile work still intact, and they spoke back to us across the aeons; showing the us their city and lifestyle that is such a powerful influence on our modern western world. |
