Great Travel Moment Practically every medieval town and city in Europe showcases a castle of some sorts. Segovia, a glorious little Spanish hideaway about an hour and a half north of Madrid is no exception. Situated in the mountains, this retreat for many a vacationing Spaniard boasts pristine views, and a spectacular array of historical landmarks. It is no small wonder then that Alcazar Segovia,(which is reputed to be the very place where Queen Isabella granted Columbus the funds to discover America) occupies a craggy cliff at the tail end of the old city, with stunning vistas to match. Wandering through the impressive, well-maintained rooms I felt history come vividly to life. Upon discovering my friend, engulfed in shadow, reading by the delicate light of the Romanesque-style window; the framed landscape behind him reminiscent of a Renaissance painting; I decided this was a moment not to be missed. |
