Great Travel Moment The arena of Verona is a Roman amphitheatre built in 1 BC during the last years of the rule of Emperor Augustus. It is one of the best preserved arena of its kind in the world. It thas been used for entertainment, jousts, gladiator fights, tournaments and operas. The first opera performed here (on August 10, 1913)was the"Aida" by Giuseppe Verdi. The arena has excellent acoustic. It is one of Verona's famous landmarks. |

We were there before the season began (May) but my daughter got to see an opera there in '06. It was a wonderful arena and if you see it before the coliseum in Rome, you'll be able to imagine that one before the marble was stripped away!

Thanks, streetrod and Nadine. Lucky you! Unfortunately, the opera season is from June to August. We were there the end of November. Too cold!

Seeing an opera in this amphitheatre was a great experience in many ways. I sat on the HARD seats and I remember them well. La Traviata lasted about four hours due to rain interruptions. Good shot!!
