Great Travel Moment The Golden Pavilion, or Kinkaku-ji, is one of the most beautiful pavilions in all of Japan. This gold-leaf covered pagoda was originally built 1397 as a residence for a retired shogun, but it was later converted to Zen temple upon the shogun's death in 1408. In 1950, fire destroyed the temple. The temple, which houses sacred relics of Buddha, was rebuilt in 1955. I took my family to see the Golden Pavilion during our vacation to Japan. The temple was literally glowing when the sunlight hit the gold leaf. |
