Don't be surprised if you open your favorite bridge magazine (fear notwe won't breathe a word about your subscription) to discover that the semi-clad span before you is the centerfold. After all, the stunning way in which it casts shadows and reflects off the water is no accident. Wait till you road test this baby and see how it curves and slinks across the riveryou'll half expect it to purr.
Not only is this 350-foot-long pont named for a retired rail bridge but it is made largely from reused sections of the same. Coincidentally, its name is a homophone of the word that describes its spidery aspect; the name is also commonly misspelled. A London-based engineering firm (whose house of song you know well) assembled the framework downstream and shipped it upriver. The forward-thinking, nearly two-million-dollar project includes bike and pedestrian paths as well as a lane dedicated to the physically challenged.
You are in the nation's second city, a state capital named for a nineteenth-century lamb. As you ride the trams around town, you'll find that, thankfully, a great deal of Victorian architecture survives. Look out, too, for the bridge builder's many earlier works, and see how many cantilevered structures you can spot.
Sexy as it is, this catwalk design was intended to be an homage to something utilitarian: an indigenous people's eel trap. Yet Bollywood found it shapely enough to use in dance numbers. Like any centerfold, this beauty appears to have big-screen aspirations. For now, we'll have to suspend judgment.
Where are you, anyhow?
