Condé Nast Traveler: Where Are You? Contest

Yikes, your hotel seems to be melting before your very eyes. Is this what happens when you paint the town red all night? After all, this state capital's historic center is crammed with so many pubs that it's been dubbed the world's longest bar. Copious amounts of "old beer," the town's wickedly delicious caramel-hued refreshment, and your world starts to look like a Dalí canvas.
But wait that's not a hotel. You're actually staggering toward the middle office building of an asymmetrical trio erected just over a decade ago. Occupied by insurance, advertising, and media firms, the edifices anchor a restored dock area. Dressed in metal, the shiny one was designed to reflect the two that flank it. And how revolutionary that, in our over-climatized age, every window opens!
In the industrial era, this city was more Pittsburgh than posh, yet it has long produced composers, poets, and painters. When not sampling the brews, you can shop elegant King's Avenue and admire the canal that runs down the center. You might return for the massive fun fair and a carnival staged annually, or for Japan Day in spring and a major world boat show in winter (you'll search in vain for the ocean, though).
But for sheer extravaganza, nothing will top the fever of the continent's annual song contest, to be hosted here shortly. Gloriously kitschy, it makes American Idol seem like the Van Cliburn Competition. Entire nations pin their hopes and dreams on teens singing angsty anthems. Now that's a sobering thought.
