Everything old is new again at the three-year-young island-resort of Madinat Jumeirah, whose 100 man-made acres are, in effect, a faux village of traditional emirate architecture. Of the resort's three hotels, Al Qasr is the grandest—qasr means "palace," after all. With its labyrinthine canals where dhows transport guests through the complex, this opulent Old Arabia–style property (life-size gilded horse statues and all) rises several stories above its sand-colored sister hotels. Your view encompasses the iconic sail-shaped Burj Al Arab hotel jutting into the Gulf, the first Dubaian foray into modern extravagance ("Readers' Choice Awards,"), as well as the resort's waterside souk, below, a collection of touristy cafés, restaurants, galleries, and shops designed to evoke an Arabian bazaar of yore.
