When the art of skiing was pioneered in Switzerland, it would have been impossible to imagine the level of creature comforts now offered once you leave the piste (after all, it was supposed to be a macho sport). Take, for example, what awaits you here, in Room P of the The Omnia, a mountain lodge in Zermatt. After a few bracing gulps of the air from your balcony, you can retire for a soak in a Japanese cedar bathtub. The lodge itself requires a head for heightsthe main entrance, atop a rock in the middle of town, is 5,411 feet above sea level. Zermatt is car-free; however, when you head for the lifts, a horse-drawn sleigh or carriage can take you there. And after that soak in the tub? A fireside drink in the Lounge Bar, perhapsrecalling that, in Latin, omnia means "everything."
