I have lived in Hawaii for 19 years, which is to say, since birth. Yes it's paradise. Yes it has a great power to connect you to it when it's your homeland. But yes, it is a formidable ambition to try to leave Hawaii when you want to see something that doesn't exist on a 45x30 mile island. It's hard to go downtown without putting a notch in your belt. I was lucky to go to California for the first time -- 6 months ago when I was 18. But you definitely have to come if you haven't been. You might end up staying, if you can afford it. I can still tell you, though, it'll probably be worth it.
