London restaurants
London restaurant czar Gordon Ramsay, the much-lauded footballer turned superchef, not only dominates London's dining scene, but also its bookshelves, television screens, and food pages (business pages, too). He opens restaurants to rave reviews with insolent ease and has handpicked a new generation of excellent chefs to work his burgeoning empire, from Angela Hartnett at the Connaught (16 Carlos Place, Mayfair, W1; 44-207-592-1222; www.gordonramsay.com/theconnaught) to Marcus Wareing at Pétrus. But a sample of Ramsay's success comes at a price, and not just in terms of your wallet—scoring a table in a Ramsay restaurant can be a lengthy process (book ahead by a month or more). Of course, there's more to eating out in London than Ramsay's hallowed halls. Bellamy's retro-chic brasserie food, the Berkeley Square's brilliantly inventive global cuisine, Alan Yau's Michelin-starred Chinese at Yauatcha (15-17 Broadwick Street, Soho, W1; 44-207-494-8888) and Hakkasan, and Amaya's refined take on Indian food satisfy London's insatiable hunger for gastronomic multiculturalism. And there are plenty of inexpensive and enjoyable dining experiences to be had; seek out a gastropub, or one of the many Bangladeshi restaurants on Brick Lane, and you'll be equally satisfied with the food and the check. Even Ramsay himself agrees—check out the chef's favorite places to eat in London.
