New York City shopping

New York remains one of the world's most exciting shopping cities, but the proliferation of big multinational chains on the avenues and the sheer variety on offer can make a shopping trip daunting. One way to render the experience more manageable is to think of the city as a series of villages. To that end, we've divided this guide into the major neighborhoods, highlighting the retail experiences in each area that offer either true one-of-a-kind gems or are the ultimate expression of their brand (more than a few upscale brands, for instance, have their flagship stores here).

Each neighborhood has its own distinct flavor. The West Village (which, for the purposes of this guide, encompasses some 20 blocks between Horatio and West 14th Streets) is the haunt of fashion editors and cool downtown girls with plenty of disposable income, who shop for everything from French antiques to haute couture. Soho is home to an array of world-class design stores and avant-garde fashion, while the East Village and Lower East Side offer a more eclectic shopping experience —the chance of finding a bragworthy bargain here is pleasingly high. Venture to the storied midtown area, around Fifth and Madison Avenues, and expect to be dazzled by luxury: This is where fashion houses and jewelers vie to outdo one another with high-design spaces and showstopping collections.
