Puerto Rico restaurants
Ask where you should have dinner, and your concierge will undoubtedly tell you SoFo. South Fortaleza Street, in Old San Juan, has many of the island's best restaurants, such as Aguaviva and Dragonfly. The food will amaze you, but so will the lackadaisical attitude of the hostesses and the amount of time you spend waiting for a table. You can have memorable meals elsewhere in Old San Juan—just follow the locals to spots like Il Perugino or Trois Cent Onze.
For traditional fare, head to any restaurant called a fonda. These storefront eateries serve comida criolla, the local fare made with recipes passed down through generations. You'll find many of these in and around Plaza del Mercado, a fruit and vegetable market just south of Condado. (It's a bit hard to find, so take a taxi.) Just don't expect much in the way of decor.
