Extreme Sports for Spectators

Inaugural World Snowboarding Championships, Oslo, Norway

Why watch: Snowboarders get their mojo back

Melons? Double corks? Chicken salads? Even if you've got absolutely no idea what snowboarders are talking about, it's very easy to appreciate the sport's plucky showmanship. After 13 years as an Olympic event, there's a big effort underway to take competitive snowboarding back to its edgy roots. Following a lot of goatee scratching, the dudes at the World Snowboard Federation have come up with a new World Snowboarding Championships that's being hailed as a fresher and fairer alternative to the more established major events. Located at the Oslo Vinterpark, in Oslo, the inaugural championships will feature men's and women's slope-style and half-pipe contests, with a qualification system that gives seasoned pros and competitive rookies an equal chance to bag themselves top place. That means there'll be a bunch of riders going to Norway with their safety catches off and nothing to lose. If the buzz that's circulating the global snowboarding community is anything to go by, this funky, egalitarian board fest will be a must-see event.
