Trekking in Nepal
The thrill: It's the adventure on every adrenaline-junkie's bucket list: Trekking Mount Everest. You'll follow centuries-old trade routes through Nepal's Khumbu region carved out along alpine rivers, and encounter sherpas herding their yaks and monks chanting from inside brightly colored ancient monasteries. If the climb isn't daring enough, sample the yak-butter tea or thumba, the local booze, at intimate lodges in remote villages.
The goodwill: Simply by booking your trip with OneSeed Expeditions, you'll be helping a Nepalese woman start or expand her own business. Created by Chris Baker, a recent Yale graduate who previously worked with Kiva.org, along with Bishnu Thapa, a Nepalese woman who put herself through graduate school while working as a guide, OneSeed is the first tour operator in the world to merge microfinance with hiking expeditions (the first trek will take place in February 2012). A loan is distributed to local female entrepreneurs through Patan BPW, OneSeed's lending partner, on the first day of every trip, and it is paid back within a year. OneSeed plans to take its traveling microfinance model into Latin America by the end of 2012.
