Galloping through Cappadocia
The thrill: The magical region of Cappadocia in Turkey has poor roads and rough terrain, making much of the Dalí-esque landscape inaccessible to the average visitor. Horseback is the way to discover the most surreal nooks and crannies and reach places where people still live traditional Anatolian lives. When you're not in the saddle, you can take spectacular hot air balloon rides or crawl through ancient cave dwellings. Nights are spent in tents on the rugged terrain. Trips are limited to just a dozen travelers and are led by Relief Riders founder and former film producer Alexander Souri—along with a caravan of local guides, porters, and goats.
The goodwill: Visiting far-flung locales can be hard, but living there can be even harder. Access to medical care is a luxury that's often inaccessible and unaffordable. Travelers with Relief Riders International accompany a dentist and bring much-needed supplies to adults and children living in remote villages. Don't worry—volunteers are not expected to perform root canals. Their job is to help manage crowds and chat with the patients who gather.
