Music's Greatest Hits

by Kara Zuaro

Miami, March 1, 1969

The Moment: At Dinner Key Auditorium in Coconut Grove, an inebriated Jim Morrison is muddling through a set with the Doors when a fan leaps on stage and showers him with Champagne, spurring "Mr. Mojo Risin'" to do some rising of his own. Whether or not he actually whips anything out before segueing into "Light My Fire" is a debate for the ages, but one extremely uncool audience member files a complaint about the incident. Morrison is later convicted of profanity and indecent exposure; while awaiting appeal in Paris, he dies from a drug overdose (or does he?).

Where to go now: You can visit Jim's grave at Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, but perhaps a more fitting way to pay homage is to let it all hang out at Haulover Beach, a clothing-optional strand in Sunny Isles, Florida, just north of Miami.
