Music's Greatest Hits

by Kara Zuaro

Vienna, February 1784

The Moment: At the age of 28—about 450 compositions into his career—Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart vows to get organized and compile a dated catalog of his works. Perhaps he owes this orderly impulse to his sweet new digs, a posh seven-room apartment in Vienna, affectionately known as "Mozarthaus." He makes rent by producing a masterpiece per month, including Le Nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni—and proves once and for all that the composition of fine art doesn't require starvation and squalor.

Where to go now: Instead of crowding 250 candles on a Sacher torte, the Viennese are celebrating Mozart's birthday with a refurbished exhibition center at Mozarthaus, and a calendar full of celebratory concerts at venues such as the Vienna Opera House (pictured) and the Theater an der Wien. For more details (and a walking tour of Vienna) read "Mozart's Party" from the March 2006 issue of Condé Nast Traveler.
