THE EDGY ONE
Where: Chambers, Minneapolis
The draw: A survey of shock-art by Brit bad boys such as Damien Hirst
The scene: Sensation-craving hipsters and those who love them
Picture this: This sister to the funky art-centric Chambers Hotel in Manhattan is actually edgier than its big-city sibling, housing the art collection of hotel owner Ralph Burnet. Minneapolis is hot right now, and this property has all-white gallery-style common areas, all the better to show off Burnet's spectacular holdings, mostly masterpieces from the '90s rebels known as the Young British Artists: Gary Hume, Sam Taylor-Wood, Tracy Emin, and Hirst (he of the formaldehyde shark). Aside from the permanent artworks, the on-site Burnet Gallery showcases temporary contemporary exhibits four times a year, such as an upcoming solo show by the controversial photographer Angela Strassheim (a former autopsy photographer). Of course, the hotel's rooms are suitably contemporary and minimalist, as the entire place was overseen by starchitect David Rockwell. There's artwork in every room and thoughtful touches like LCD TVs in the bathroom, and all food service is helmed by (who else?) Jean-Georges Vongerichten.
