MAUI VALUE
Surfers don't need to spend a fortune to enjoy this water wonderland, so why should you? The funky beachfront cottages at the Inn at Mama's Fish House in genuine and less-touristed Paia remain one of the best-kept secrets on the island, and they're an even better deal when you stock your fridge with wholesome goodies from nearby Mana Foods, such as a breakfast burrito or tofu wrap ($4 each). You're well situated to catch the best show on the island—it's free, but not always playing. Jaws, the 40-plus-foot wave that breaks on the north shore, is where Laird Hamilton and other daredevils do their stuff (ask a local if it's on and how to find it). If that whets your appetite for adventure, take the 20-foot plunge into the ocean off of Pu'u Keka'a ("Black Rock"), on Ka'anapali Beach. Ancient Hawaiians believed the rocky outcropping was the jumping-off point for souls leaving this world. (Coral-encrusted lava below the surface makes this a prime snorkeling spot, too.) As night falls, the surfers head over to Casanova in Makawao, a humble Italian restaurant by day that turns into a sexy nightspot especially on Thursday—Ladies' Night. Show 'em the lava gash on your knee. Now you've got cred.
