Islands, many people agree, are as close as one can get to heaven while still having to pay taxes. (Though if you move to the right one, even those might be avoided.) Trying to pick the "best" is a foolish enterprise—just picking the criteria is asking for a fight. So we chose some of our faves, based on such admittedly diverse criteria as where we might find the fewest footprints in the sand other than our own (Cocoa Island, Maldives) and where we are likely to be touched by the shadow of a bikinied supermodel (Florianópolis, Brazil). And, for the sake of discussion, you can submit your own favorite island or vote on other nominations using our cool new voting tool. But don't blame us if we still think we're right!
