Beach + Island

Celebs in the Sand

by Natalie Walsh

Where: Four Mile Beach, Port Douglas, Australia

Who hangs out here? The playground of presidents, sports gods, and movie stars, the resort town of Port Douglas ("The Port" to those in the know) is awash with stars who prefer its laid-back vibe to the brash glitz of Bondi. You'll discover a mix of homegrown and visiting luminaries such as Hugh Jackman, Kylie Minogue, Bill Clinton, Sean Penn, and Glenn Close on Four Mile Beach in this upmarket but funky little town.

The star attraction: The Port is at the gateway to two of the most stunning natural wonders Down Under—the Great Barrier Reef and the World Heritage Daintree rain forest. Or just get your kicks on Four Mile Beach, with its swaying coconut palms, sparkling surf, and lithe bodies in board shorts and Kirrily Johnston bikinis.

Stargazing: Take a ringside seat at one of the smart but relaxed cafés and restaurants clustered around the town's main hub of Macrossan Street, or pull up a stool at the Daintree Lounge of the Sheraton Mirage hotel, where most visiting celebs and moguls hole up for R&R and G&Ts.

The hot bed: Bed down like Bill Clinton in the Mirage suite at the Sheraton Mirage. Set on the sand at Four Mile Beach and surrounded by 365 acres of tropical landscaped gardens, the hotel has an 18-hole championship golf course, three high-end restaurants, and saltwater swimming lagoons.
