Beach + Island

Seaside Classics for a New Generation

by Colleen Clark

Forty 1° North, Rhode Island

Old-school cool: Sailboats tacking across Narragansett Bay, the blue-blood crowd taking to the clay in their tennis whites, the rest of us tucking into clamcakes at Flo's Clam Shack. Newport may be known for its pinkies-up yachting crowd and imposing windswept manses, but its sea breezes welcome everyone from old-money socialites to Beantown weekenders down for a dip in the Sound. They all come together on Easton's Beach (that's First Beach, to the locals) for lazy-day sunbathing, a spin round the carousel, and family-friendly outdoor jazz and swing concerts.

Retro revival: Forty 1° North hotel, fully opened in 2011, takes a page from Easton's, bringing together the pedigreed boating set and travelers who prefer a laid-back social scene. There's an on-site marina, alfresco surf-and-turf dining dockside at The Grill, and family-friendly Christie's restaurant, where sail-like seats hang from the ceiling, Pop art–inspired murals decorate the walls, and the menu includes one of the best burgers in town. Classic also meets modern in the 32 rooms, which come with plush Frette linens and subtle technological perks (in-room iPads, iPod-integrated HD video and music systems, and 40-inch LED flat-screen TVs). Techno-savvy with nautical class? We like Newport's new tack.
