Beach + Island

Unexplored Caribbean

by Bob Payne

With all the honeymooners and package tourists, you'd think the days of exploring the Caribbean Sea and discovering something new were over. But beyond the tourist favorites, where the sand is raked clean of footprints each morning and no musician can play for more than ten minutes without a request for "Hot Hot Hot," there's a world of lesser-known Caribbean islands whose character, and eccentric characters, make them well worth a visit. Getting there may require the kind of flight where they have to shoo the goats off the runway, and you won't find any five-star all-inclusive resorts. But make the effort and you'll be among the lucky travelers who know, for instance, which tiny island has more than 100 rum shops, or where to be a castaway in the British Virgin Islands. Whichever island you choose, there's sure to be a local or two eager to bend your ear about how this is the real Caribbean.
