YOUR CAR AIN'T WELCOME
There are a handful of destinations where automobiles aren't just unnecessary, they're prohibited. On Mackinac Island, located on Lake Huron between Michigan's upper and lower peninsulas, city dwellers ditch their cars for horse-drawn carriages, bikes, and sailboats. A visit is like a trip into history (probably why they shot the flick Somewhere in Time here): There's a stone-skipping tournament every July, the commanding 1887 Grand Hotel still requires jacket and tie at dinnertime, and you can take your morning constitutional in the 2,000-acre state park. Other motor-free zones in the United States include New York's Fire Island (think an endless skinny beach with equally endless boardwalks), Bald Head Island in North Carolina (mostly nature preserve with beaches and oak forest) and Virginia's Tangier Island (a crabbing community in the Chesapeake Bay). Leave your car keys at home.
