OKAY, OKAY: GO FOR A DRIVE
Can't quite give up the road trip this summer? Then at the least join the growing list of Prius converts—Larry David and Leonardo DiCaprio among them—and rent one of the Toyota hybrids, which average 51 highway mpg. (A big SUV like a Lincoln Navigator? Only 18.) Hertz rents Priuses out of LAX—so take one for a perfect road trip up Highway 1 between L.A. and San Francisco, and all the famous cliff-side views in between. (Note: There have been road closures south of San Francisco on the San Mateo Coast—check www.dot.ca.gov/hg/roadinfo.) Eco-friendly lodges along the way will keep the green vibe going. The tent bungalows at Costanoa, just outside Pescadero, are stylish and sweet; Big Sur's Treebones Resort has 16 yurts overlooking the mountains and the Pacific—and fireplaces that probably burn more gas than the Prius.
