September, Our Favorite Month

by Sarah Tuff

Fiji's constellation of 332 islands in the turquoise South Pacific shines brightest in September, when the dry season and the tropical "winter" meet. That means less humidity, less rain, and much clearer reef waters. Make the most of the climate by disappearing to the spanking-new Navutu Stars resort and its nine thatched roof bures. The lodgings are perched along three bays, but the interiors eschew the wicker and pastels of many local resorts in favor of modern, open interiors and splashes of primary colors. It's located on the tiny island of Yaqeta, near the Great Astrolabe Reef—some of the best diving on the globe. After a day spying on all those gorgeous sea creatures, you'll probably be hungry. Navutu's Italian owners fuse Mediterranean, Asian, and Fijian flavors in such dishes as four-cheese gnocchi seasoned with local (and delicious) cassava root. Your horoscope was right: The stars are aligned perfectly.
