September, Our Favorite Month

by Sarah Tuff

For a bit of cosmopolitan sparkle without dropping big-city bucks, our vote goes to Vancouver. The weather hovers in the high 60s, and Hollywood types take advantage of the fine weather by shooting next year's TV shows and movies (not to mention attending the start of the Vancouver International Film Festival on September 28). But we're here to chow down: Vancouver's 4,000-some restaurants are champions of global fusion, and since Canadian dollars exchange favorably with greenbacks, fine dining is a terrific bargain. This fall is seeing the arrival of several noteworthy newcomers. The Salt Tasting Room is obsessed with cured meats and artisanal cheeses, and lets diners choose their own combinations—say, lamb prosciutto, Cashel Blue cheese, and organic honey. Sanafir is all about innovative Moroccan-inspired tapas, such as scallops with tandoori foam and seared salmon medallions with candied carrots. Still hungry? You'll encounter food fests around the region, including the Feast of Fields on Vancouver Island and the Fraser Valley Wine Festival. We guarantee: You won't return home hungry.
