Budget Hotels, Expensive Cities: New York City

by Justin Ocean

The Jane, West Village, New York City

As with the ever-trendy outfits clopping around the nearby Meatpacking District, cool comes in tight packages at the Jane hotel. The former SRO boarding house for sailors (and one-time hospice for survivors of the Titanic disaster) was wizarded into the trend zone in 2008 by the management team behind the design-forward Maritime and Bowery hotels. Yet where those properties command top price, the Jane keeps it cute with $99 single rooms and $125 bunks. The cabins are reminiscent of an Orient-Express train car in style (dark woods, deep red coverlets, vintage fans) and especially in size. Standard rooms are a mere 50 square feet, and anybody over six feet two inches might struggle with the beds. There are plenty of perks, such as free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, complimentary bikes, and High Line adjacency. You can also jump the queue at the Jane Ballroom, then recap the night over le petit déjeuner at Cafe Gitane. But there is one more catch: shared bathrooms. Constantly cleaned, mind you, but sitting pretty in retro chrome and white subway tiles at the end of the hall. Yet for the young and Euro who prefer to explore rather than nest, it's all aboard this grown-up hostel train.
