Yotel, Times Square, New York City
Fans of Yotel's by-the-hour London and Amsterdam airport hotels (not that kind of hourly) will feel right at home settling in for a longer spell at those properties' New York City cousin. The lobby's check-in/out kiosks will be familiar to frequent fliers, and we'd happily see creaky old baggage carousels learn a thing or two from the automated (if slightly terrifying) left luggage–slinging "Yobot" (pictured). At 669 rooms, the property, which opened in June 2011, rivals its Times Square brethren in size if not price: Premium Cabins start at $249. Guest rooms employ an everything-in-its-place efficiency, with integrated desk/alarm clocks and queen beds that fold futonlike into a couch (or rest beneath elevated bunks). Smooth white surfaces and purple mood lighting offset by light woods and tan pleather lend a clubby yet slightly sterile feel, as if Virgin America planes had taken root, while glassed-in rain showers and stunning skyline views make 170 square feet seem airy. But at this price point, the deal is the details: fast, free Wi-Fi; muffins for breakfast and a 24/7 coffee closet on every floor; a tiny gym; and a gigantic outdoor terrace (the largest of any hotel in Manhattan), where a buzzing mélange of guests powers down tequila cocktails and Latin-Asian tapas to the steady club beat.
