The Mave, Flatiron District, New York City
An unassailable truth of city life: Convenience is key. So if you're wanting to stay in the super-central thick of it just north of Madison Square Park (a.k.a. NoMad) in the Flatiron District but have been priced out of the ultratrendy, supposedly budget Ace Hotel (we'll believe those $250 base rates when we see them), divert a few blocks east to the Mave. While you won't have the "Page Six"–worthy lobby scene—in fact, the Mave's lobby is nothing much more than a mod entryway manned by super-attentive staff—you will find 72 cozy rooms that were kitted out in 2009 with bamboo floors, thick pillow-top mattresses, 32-inch plasma TVs, and H2O toiletries. Abstract paintings and red faux-ostrich headboards provide a color pop to the otherwise subdued decor. It's all a bit slicked-up-business by way of boutique, with grab-n-go pastries, coffee, and tea in the lobby for breakfast, plus Wi-Fi, included. Prices start at $219 for an Urban Full and a tenner more for the Madison Queen, the latter with city views and the former available with oh-so-New-York brick wall vistas (a boon for light sleepers).
